In 1991, the UK national Defence Research Agency (DRA) was formed through the union of a number of government research organisations which, in 1995, became the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA). In July 2001, QinetiQ was founded from the partition of DERA into two separate organisations and, in February 2003, became a public private partnership with US-based Carlyle Group being the equity investor. QinetiQ was then floated on the London stock market in February 2006.
A presence in North America was established in 2001 through QinetiQ Inc. In 2004, the QinetiQ North America (QNA) division was created with its own board and management. Since its establishment, QNA has grown through an acquisition strategy, including the acquisition of Analex Corporation, Apogen Technologies Inc, Foster-Miller Inc, ITS Corporation, OSEC, Planning Systems Inc and Westar.
Europe, Middle East and Australasia (EMEA) was created as a division in April 2008. QinetiQ also has a separate ventures division to oversee the management of spin-out technologies.
By January 2008, three defence consulting companies had also been acquired in Australia. These acquisitions represent our first investment in Australia and are in line with our EMEA strategy to expand our geographical footprint into markets outside the UK and US.
In 2009 the Group continued its acquisition into North America through the acquisition of niche specialist capability areas. During this year the MOD sold its shareholding in the Group.
