Exercise Laboratory

The exercise physiology facility assesses responses to physical exercise The exercise physiology facility is equipped to perform a range of assessments on responses to physical exercise as well as measures of physical fitness and work capacity.

We can can carry out laboratory-based assessments forduring walking/running, cycling and rowing, as well as field assessments on individuals and teams/groups undertaking their normal duties.
*

The Exercise Physiology Facility includes:

  • XELG 70 Ergo Woodway treadmill (Velocity: 0 to 25 mph; incline: 0 to 25%)
  • Electronically-controlled Lode Cycle Ergometer
  • SRM Cycle Ergometer Training System
  • Concept 2 Rowing Ergometer
  • Cosmed K4 breath-by-breath portable gas analyser
  • Team Polar heart rate monitoring system
  • Wrist- and ankle-mounted watches activity monitors
  • Grip and back strength dynamometers
  • Portable vertical jump mat

*

The facility can provide:
Cardiorespiratory assessments of responses to submaximal exercise and assessments of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) during walking/running, cycling and rowing using both the Douglas bag technique and breath-by-breath analysis.

Haematological assessments of responses to exercise including blood glucose, and blood lactate for determination of lactate threshold and maximal lactate steady-state.
Individual assessments of the in-situ physical demands of athletic activities and work tasks.

Estimates of energy expenditure on up to 30 individuals simultaneously during athletic activities and work tasks using heart rate and activity data.
Assessments of grip strength, back strength, and lower body power.
