We have been working for several years with the Highways Agency, on the software maintenance manager project - improving the operation of the ITS and Communications systems for motorways.
The project provides project management, supplier management, and engineering expertise, to support a range of software-controlled systems in use across the road network. These systems include emergency phones, matrix signs and other gantry-mounted equipments, fog detection systems, traffic detection systems, and emerging driver information systems.
We also provide expertise on a range of other software-related tasks. The work covers:
- the test and acceptance of new and existing equipment
- updates to software, operating manuals, and operator training.

Among the services we provide to enhance control centre management are:
- technical support on a wide range of software-related topics
- investigations and upgrades of existing highways systems with embedded software
- audits of existing suppliers of highways systems
- monitoring or acceptance testing of supply of modifications/upgrades to existing highways systems
- authoring or providing manuals and other technical documentation for existing or new highways systems
- designing and delivering training courses on existing highways systems
- asset management services for highways equipment and systems
- procurement support, both commercial and technical.
Research
We have been successfully carrying out research into traffic- and highway-related issues, for many years.
At present QinetiQ leads a multi-layered network of organisations, actively working on many projects concerning ITS. For the past 3 years this network has held a Research Framework Agreement with the Highways Agency, providing specialist expertise on an extensive range of current topics. |
