What happens when I finish my hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Before you start any planned treatment the hyperbaric unit staff will talk to you about the likely number of treatments you will require and whether you will need any other type of treatment in between the hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions. For example, if you have been referred by a surgeon who wants to use the hyperbaric oxygen to improve the outcome of some planned surgery, it is common to have 20 or 30 treatments before your operation and 10 afterwards.

Before you leave the unit after your last hyperbaric treatment the doctor will make sure that any side-effects and other issues regarding the treatment are discussed with you and recorded in your notes. You will not usually need to come back to the hyperbaric unit unless there are specific arrangements, for example, for wound care. The hyperbaric doctor will, therefore, write a letter to the person who originally referred you, to discharge you from the hyperbaric medicine unit. This simply signifies that you have finished all the agreed treatments for the meantime but you can be referred again if you need hyperbaric oxygen therapy in future.
