Trains are like Royal Navy ships, in that they're both fairly closed physical environments. So they both have to rely on as many self-contained systems as possible... like waste management units that:
recycle waste water
raise hygiene standards
improve levels or environmental compliance
reduce running and service cost.
Our Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS) has been on Royal Navy ships since 2002 and we've now developed it for train use.
IWMS is easy to use and maintain IWMS recycles waste water so it can be reused to flush the toilets and - once sterilized - for hand washing. It incorporates a macerator unit, bio-reactor, UV-sterilisation element and reverse osmosis. It uses proven technology and it's compact enough for most types of rail vehicle. A major plus is that IWMS can be integrated with a vacuum system. This increases the volume of recirculated water to the same amount a domestic toilet uses - six litres compared with the 300ml available on most modern trains' vacuum style toilets. The result is a greatly improved flush process, with enough water for gravity flush toilet systems. For the train traveller, this means fewer blocked toilets and no unpleasant odours. For the train operator it means higher customer satisfaction. It also means less maintenance and reduced costs, as the system needs only minimum attention once a month.
