“QinetiQ’s roadmap is an immensely valuable tool for allowing us to understand the fuel sustainability issues the armed forces will face in the future, chart a way through them and come up with solutions that will maintain operational efficiency and safeguard security of supply.”

Group Captain Nigel Arnold, Assistant Director of Operations, DFG OPS, Ministry of Defence
Challenge

  • The Defence Fuels Group (DFG) of the MOD supplies nearly one billion litres of fuel and lubricants to the UK’s armed forces each year. It must ensure that they are of appropriate quality and fit for use. It also needs to address the future sustainability of supplies and investigate viable alternatives to oil-based products.

Solution

  • QinetiQ carried out quality testing on fuels and lubricants issued to the armed forces, first ensuring that the specifications are appropriate and then that individual fuels conform with their specifications.
  • A future-looking roadmap has been produced to scope the issues and problems of fuel sustainability and assist the DFG in formulating solutions to address those problems.
  • The roadmap looks at how petroleum based fuels can be replaced by sustainable options such as synthetic or bio fuels It also shows various drivers, including national and multinational legislation, and Government protocols on emissions.

Results

  • The DFG can fulfil its obligation to ensure that the fuels and lubricants it supplies to the armed forces are fit for purpose and this supports the three services in operating to full efficiency.
  • QinetiQ’s roadmap is assisting the DFG to plan for the time when oil runs out, mitigating the risks and ensuring future sustainability of defence fuel supplies.
  • It will also enable the DFG to comply with environmental policies surrounding climate change and CO2 emissions.
