Marine diesel engine manufacturers are now faced with measuring emissions and calculating emissions indices in accordance with the International Maritime Organisation's NOx Technical Code. There are several test cycles listed in the Code, which some manufacturers do not have the equipment or expertise to do or cannot schedule the tests into facilities that are over-worked.

Complementing the standard suite of measurement equipment, QinetiQ has designed a programme that will calculate the weighted Nox emissions as a test cycle progresses, giving a provisional answer at the end of the test.

The results, for either auxiliary engines or propeller-law-operated engines, can immediately be compared against legislative limits. Intermediate calculation values are also shown so the customers can be confident that the test cell and engine are performing as expected.

IMO NOx testing has been witnessed by surveyors from Lloyd's Register on a range of engines and applications.

To process the emissions data fully a detailed fuel analysis is required.
