To the Rescue

QinetiQ trial tank QinetiQ provided performance data to support the rescue effort on Canadian submarine HMCS Chicoutimi in October 2004.

On the day of the fire, QinetiQ discussed with the UKs MOD how to support the rescue and offered to run trials in its towing tank, based at its Haslar site in Gosport. The aim was to provide information on how best to tow the submarine.

Over a period of 36 hours, QinetiQ ran towing trials in its tank at Haslar on the model of the Upholder class of submarine, the same class as Chicoutimi. This provided information and data that according to MOD was vital for the recovery effort on HMCS Chicoutimi.

QinetiQs information on the towing experiments was given to the emergency team dealing with the rescue as well as to other interested authorities.

QinetiQ has previously offered and provided similar assistance to MOD when HMS Nottingham ran aground near Lord Howe Island, 200 miles off Australia, in July 2002.
