A law enforcement agency came to QinetiQ with some video data acquired at the scene of a crime. Many hours of data had been recorded onto a single video recorder, from a number of CCTV cameras. The problem was that the video recorder had not been working properly and therefore the images from the cameras were not in predictable sequence, as they should have been. This meant that the law enforcement agency would have had to manually and painstakingly go through this huge amount of data, still frame by still frame, to obtain the information from the relevant camera.
We transferred the content of the video onto a digital video hard disc system and were able to conduct semi-automatic analysis of the data to extract all good quality images from the camera concerned. This enabled a single video sequence to be reconstructed, showing events over an extended time period. Then, to ascertain whether the imagery could be further enhanced, we carried out formal analysis of the degradations present in the video and applied optimised correction.
Our work saved the law enforcement agency a significant amount of time and effort. |
