What is Defence Matters? Defence Matters is a campaign to raise awareness of what the UK defence industry does to support the UK armed forces and the wider contribution it makes to the economy. This is because the defence industry is proud of the unique role it plays in equipping and supporting the Armed Forces.
It is sponsored by the Defence Industries Council (DIC) which consists of a number of people within the industry who provide advice to government on defence industrial issues. This is done through the National Defence Industries Council (NDIC) which is chaired by the Secretary of State for Defence.
Members of the DIC include, Defence Manufacturers' Association (DMA), Intellect, Society for British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) and the Society of Maritime Industries. Membership of the DIC is on a rotational basis and is currently made up of senior executives from QinetiQ, BAE Systems, Babcock, BVT, Chemring, Finmeccanica, Kembrey Wiring Systems, Rolls Royce, Thales and Serco. The current membership of the DIC is listed here.
Why is the defence industry doing this? The defence industry is proud of the unique role it plays in equipping and supporting the Armed Forces. It makes a unique contribution to the British economy - as a source of highly-skilled jobs, investment, innovative products and export income. The defence market competes with other industries for skilled employees, and with defence companies from other countries for work. As the commitments the UK's Armed Forces face at home and overseas evolve, the UK defence industry has to ensure that we are in the best possible position to support their work.
However there is a lack of awareness about the defence industry, and QinetiQ amongst others in the defence market would like more people to understand the value of the industry.
How is QinetiQ involved? This is the first time the UK defence industry has come together on such an initiative and QinetiQ, as a member of the DIC, has signed up to support Defence Matters. Across the UK, defence companies large and small are getting involved. Smaller companies are hosting visits from their local MPs, while larger ones like QinetiQ are spreading the word first amongst its employees.
What does the industry want to communicate? QinetiQ wants people to know that the UK defence industry plays a key role in equipping and supporting our Armed Forces, and how it contributes to the UK's prosperity and security. These themes have been distilled into six key messages that are key to the campaign. These messages can be found on the www.defencematters.co.uk website. The campaign is working to promote these messages to employees of the defence industry, MPs and the general public.
