At present much military planning is completed manually. The challenge is to increase the tempo and accuracy of planning operations by combining the skill, knowledge and intuition of an experienced planner coupled with bespoke computer tools to support the analysis of geographical and operational data. QinetiQ has a very successful track record in developing such tools.
As part of the MoD Land Environment Air Picture Provision (LEAPP) Equipment Programme, QinetiQ is designing and developing software modules for air defence site planning optimisation and associated sensor and communications planning.
Site Planning Tool The Site Planning Tool (SPT) is a geospatial decision support tool for the geographical locating of ground based air defence weapons and sensors which is designed to aid a user with the difficult task of site selection.
SPT consists of a number of software components which are combined in a map-based decision environment, including:
• intervisibility – dead ground/line-ofsight analysis • terrain analysis – terrain data such as roads, rivers and hills • geometry – ground based air defence weapons, sensor and communications boundaries
SPT makes dynamic calculations using an algorithm which QinetiQ has specially developed for this task, and then displays air defence unit radar coverage and target engagement rates with different coloured overlays on a map. This provides the commander with the best options for siting, saving time and effort.
