*
Challenger 2 at Exercise Urgent Quest The Vehicle Systems group provided technical analysis for the Ministry of Defence of the performance of combat identification systems during exercise Urgent Quest in September 2005.
*

Through MOD research, technology demonstrator programmes and support to military vehicle programmes the group is recognised as a world leading authority in the following specialist areas:

  • Network technologies and protocols – develop and demonstrate systems utilising appropriate technologies & protocols (e.g. MilCAN, TTP/C, FlexRay, Mil-Std-1553B, CAN), author of Vetronics Standards and Guidelines document (www.vsi.org.uk/standards). Chair for the industry MilCAN Working Group (www.milcan.org).
  • Safety and Certification of drive-by-wire systems on vehicles – certification and safety case development against EN61508 European safety standard. Developed a vehicle demonstrator to exercise the processes for development and certification of safety critical databus systems.
  • Development of video distribution systems, with specific focus on distribution of digital image data on military vehicles using Gigabit Ethernet, User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Real Time Protocol (RTP).
  • Power distribution architectures for military vehicles including power storage and generation.
  • Battlefield Target Identification System (BTIS) technology and integration advice and design.
  • Integration of vehicle systems, displays and sensor information into crew station man-machine interfaces.
  • Provision of advice on Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) end to end implementation, demonstration of vehicle HUMS, condition monitoring and author of Defence Standard 25-24 'Health and Usage Monitoring Capability for Land Platforms (HUMS)'.
