Survive Lite - a vulnerability assessment tool

To help warship designers quickly valuate vulnerability and survivability QinetiQ has produced SURVIVETM Lite , a concept vulnerability analysis tool for rapid prototyping and initial design optimisation.

SURVIVETM Lite is based on QinetiQ’s proven SURVIVETM suite of software modelling and simulation tools and provides:

  • Automatic generation of a basic SURVIVE ship model from limited input data
  • Simple edit facilites to aid concept generation
  • Automatic generation of SURVIVE attack scenario from limited input data
  • Graphical visualisation of results suitable for rapid concept evaluation

SURVIVETM Lite consists of :

Ship concept builder

  • Graphical editing of ship structure and systems
  • Move and edit properties of watertight bulkheads, decks and major longitudional bulkheads
  • Build complex systems from a predetermined list of equipment
  • 3D view of concept

Scenario input parameters required
  • Choice of generic threats (missile, bomb or mine)
  • Above water or underwater attacks
  • Flexible positioning and fidelity of attack grids

Results visualisation
  • Vulnerability of key systems
  • Full 3D damage visualisation of damage to ship highlighting vulnerable areas


The toolset runs on a standard PC and allows the ship and systems designers to assess and optimise equipment fits and structural arrangements in terms of survivability.

SURVIVE LiteTM is available from QinetiQ as a stand-alone concept evaluation tool providing rapid prototyping and allowing initial optimisation of a design.

Supply of software and consultancy may be subject to approval by the UK Defence Export Sales Organisation

SURVIVETM is a QinetiQ vulnerability assessment tool, developed and used in a number of naval procurement programmes including the CVF aircraft carrier and Type 45 destroyer. SURVIVETM can be effectively applied in both defence and commercial situations to help mitigate the potential damage from a terrorist attack or accident.
