Space Weather is a term to describe the changes that occur in space and on the Earth that originate in the variability of our Sun. Thankfully, the Sun is very constant in terms of the visible light it provides. However, it is extremely variable when we consider light at higher frequencies (X-rays and Gamma Rays) and the particles (electrons, protons and heavy ions) that it sends out into space.

Space weather has serious consequences for humans and technological systems in space and for certain ground-based technologies.

Through QinetiQ's long history of building and testing equipment to survive in space, it has a particular interest in the effects of space weather on space electronics. We have an established expertise in providing assistance in diagnosis of spacecraft failures and operational anomalies. This work has been carried out on behalf of satellite operators, the UK government and the insurance industry.
