Batteries and fuel cells

QinetiQ has over 40 years experience in the development of power storage systems, and has been awarded contracts from ESA to evaluate future power systems for planetary exploration.

QinetiQ has also developed a lithium primary battery in flexible packaging using lithium/carbon monofluoride chemistry. Cells have achieved energy densities of 650 Wh/kg, with wide operating temperatures. This reduces the demands on the thermal control system and minimises the mass and power required for insulation and radioisotope heater units. In addition, enhanced performance is coupled with very high reliability and long shelf lives by exploiting developments for missile applications - ideal for missions with long transfer times.

As an alternative to conventional battery technology, QinetiQ has been developing Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells, which offer the capability of longer operating times with greater energy density. By storing hydrogen, reformed hydrocarbon, or methanol fuel in metal hydrides and carbon nanotubes, specific energies of over 2000 Wh/kg have been achieved.
