Shape Memory Alloys and smart wells

QinetiQ is a leader in the application and development of highly responsive Shape Memory Alloys (SMA).

SMAs are a unique blend of metals that have a "memory" and can change shape under certain physical conditions.

"With respect to the oil and gas industry, we see a huge potential for the technology." says Dr. Mark Maylin, New Technology Manager for QinetiQ E&P.

Mark and his team have recently demonstrated to a major North Sea customer the use of SMA material in activating a downhole valve.

Many other opportunities exist for this technology aside from actuators. SMA material lends itself to many of the so called smart or i-well themes circulating in the industry today in the form of wireline tools, plugs, clamps, actuators etc.
