When we can help At any time during the wind farm development process; from the initial development idea right through to the construction.
Who we can help The QinetiQ Wind Farm Radar Impact Assessment Team aspire to assist developers, landowners, manufacturers, the MoD, aviation authorities and any other stakeholders with an interest in the wind energy business.
How we can help QinetiQ offer a wide range of services for both onshore and off-shore developments:
Site optimisation - modelling techniques can be used during the wind farm design phase to identify sites and optimise the layout to achieve minimal radar impact.

Radar impact assessment for wind turbines (and any other structure):
Line of sight study - a high level study to establish whether a wind farm is within the line of site of a radar. Click on the blue cross for a larger image
Propagation analysis - a study to examine the propagation of the radar signal, taking into account the atmospheric conditions and the terrain to determine the range of the radar and whether the turbines will interact with the signal.

Full plot assessment - this study simulates the flight of an aircraft over a development and the number of plots the wind farm produces on the operator’s screen. This study uses more detailed information about the radar and the turbines.

Environmental Impact Assessment (Aviation Chapter) - analysis of propagation effects to provide impact assessment and mitigation as input to the aviation chapter of the EIA in support of a wind farm application.
Radar cross section (RCS) modelling - modelling the customer provided computer aided design (CAD) drawings or building, then modelling the CAD drawings from high fidelity source diagrams
RCS measurements - at the QinetiQ Funtington Radar Signature And Antenna Measurement Range or with the mobile multi-band pulsed radar
Expert witnesses - QinetiQ radar experts and Independent ATC expert advice from experienced ATC Operator for appearance at public inquiries or contribution to impact analysis
Independent and impartial advice - QinetiQ draw on radar and ATC expertise to provide independent and impartial advice.
"QinetiQ undertook a series of radar impact analysis reports for us over a period of eleven months. The technical work from this professional consultancy was of the highest possible standard and their commitment to service was first class, every individual working on the project was committed and competent. We would have no hesitation in recommending them." - Marie Heesom Director Hainsford Energy (Blyth Harbour) Limited
"I would highly recommend QinetiQ in the services they provide." - Ed Lock Mouchel Parkman.
