QinetiQ has been awarded a £1.5 million, three-year Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract to develop and deliver a Pyrolysis Waste Disposal System to the US Army, to process its Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). MSW covers all domestic waste that might be produced in an army base, including food, medical and sanitary items, paper, plastics, tin, oil and glass.
QinetiQ’s PyTEC™ system can process up to 100 kg of MSW per hour and operates continuously. It reclaims up to 500 kW per hour of the thermal energy from the waste, some of which will be used in electricity generation. Operating costs are therefore significantly lower than those for incineration or other methods of waste disposal.
Testing and evaluation trials will continue until early 2012. The programme is jointly funded by US Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) through the Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT) Programme and more than ten systems are expected to be acquired.
