Next generation security screening moves a step nearer

Airports around the world could soon benefit from significant advances in the use of millimetre wave imaging for security screening. QinetiQ, a leading security solutions organisation, is providing UK airport operators and aviation security professionals with a chance to see recent developments in the technology at this year's Farnborough International Airshow.

First demonstrated in Athens in late 2003 at AVSEC World, the QinetiQ imager has been designed to detect hidden metallic and non-metallic weapons and other concealed threat items. The system produces moving images of people in complete safety and allows operators to accurately locate where the threat item is hidden and take appropriate action. Such systems could also provide security for other public buildings, secure areas and VIP protection.

Commenting on the imager, Duncan Valentine QinetiQ's transport sector MD said: "This is a significant development in the fight against terrorism and we foresee millimetre wave technology becoming to people screening what X-ray is now to baggage screening."

QinetiQ conducted a trial of a prototype imager at Gatwick airport in 2002, with favourable response from both passengers and operating staff. The new demonstrator includes a number of improvements in both design and performance and further enhancements are still being developed. Field-of-view has been increased to allow full body capture, image quality has been improved and the equipment design has been slim-lined, improving passenger throughput.

QinetiQ's first millimetre wave security product is already in service. Called Borderwatch, and operated by HM Immigration Service and Eurotunnel, the system detects people trying to illegally enter Britain hidden in the back of lorries. A number of Borderwatch units are currently in operation at French and other European ports and several thousand "clandestines" have been detected so far.
