One of Europe's leading solutions providers and with many leading scientists and internationally acclaimed experts among its 10000 employees, QinetiQ is at Medica 2004 with exciting and innovative technologies destined for the health market. These include:

Decontamination Services - around six million NHS surgical procedures are carried out in England every year - they all require the use of surgical instruments.

QinetiQ is using its expertise in managing large complex services contracts to offer a fresh approach to the English National Health Service (NHS) Decontamination Programme. Used to working in safety-critical environments, the company is determined to make patient care its ultimate priority. It is confident it can deliver an outstanding decontamination service and will achieve this by working in partnership with NHS customers and key industry suppliers TNT and AMEC. QinetiQ is currently designing a decontamination facility that will serve a number of hospitals within a set geographical area. The facility will be run by a highly motivated and well-trained team and will see a streamlined, high volume throughput of surgical instruments and trays.

EEG - QinetiQ's advanced signal processing technology is set to reduce stress for EEG patients

Using technology developed for military applications, QinetiQ has developed demonstration software for processing EEG (electroencephalogram) recordings. Despite the presence of unwanted noise and interference, it provides clear signals from brain activity not attainable by any other conventional means. Analysis time is reduced and there is less stress to patients. The systemhas been developed with Worcestershire Royal Hospital and successfully tested on a wide range of hospital patient data.

Pathscore - Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today

Based on military image analysis technology, QinetiQ scientists have developed the world's first automatic breast cancer diagnostic system, PathScore. Evaluation of the system showed that its performance is similar to that of the human pathologist, but provides enhanced reproducibility. Unlike a human, it never gets tired and so can be used 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Importantly, the system is affordable because no extra expenditure is required for specialist equipment - it can be used with existing computers, microscopes and cameras.

Ferroguard MRI - MRI suites act like giant magnets and attract ferrous objects

QinetiQ scientists have developed a new ferromagnetic detection system to protect MRI suites and provide a new level of safety for patients, medical staff and equipment. Investment in Ferroguard MRI would be repaid by preventing just one minor incident and savings on a single major incident could be in excess of £100k. Ferroguard MRI automatically scans people as they enter MRI suites and sounds an alarm if any potentially lethal ferromagnetic objects are detected. Conventional archway metal detectors are large, cumbersome, difficult to install, restrict access and will alarm on all metal objects. Ferroguard MRI is inexpensive and comprises a small box bolted to either side of a doorway or corridor. It allows harmless metals to pass by and only gives an alarm when ferromagnetic objects are detected.
