Acquiring, creating and capturing knowledge sources

Effective Storage and Dissemination of Knowledge.
Storage and dissemination of information require an established taxonomy suitable for all forms of stored information, and some mechanism for distributing this out. QinetiQ will maintain a project library on behalf of the Consortium, and subject to agreements on intellectual property QinetiQ will share information on the reports generated with Consortium members annually.

Knowledge and Understanding of a Comprehensive Range of Research Techniques.
Previous knowledge and experience of using a comprehensive range of research techniques throughout the Consortium will be utilised in future projects. Part of the innovation stage of developing proposals includes the discussion of possible research methods that would be suitable, and members with expertise in particular areas would be called upon to lend technical support to any/all projects.

Creation of Knowledge from Internal Sources.
The Consortium has the capability to store Human Sciences information on dedicated Knowledge Stores, including a ‘Win Business’ site on the QinetiQ intranet, where members can share ideas, stories and experiences with the aims of improving bids and business advances. On receipt of a customer’s requirement, the HSC Programme Manager will invite all members to provide innovative research ideas/proposals. The Consortium also intends to create a central database listing key facilities and skill-sets of research staff so that the identification of maximally suitable individuals for roles can be a two-way process.

Creation of Knowledge from External Sources.
Each employee has a unique work and educational history contributing to what they bring to the Consortium. Although each has different interests and areas of expertise grounded in research external to HSC, the common theme is the ability to channel knowledge into new research projects. QinetiQ has a comprehensive resource centre, both electronic and physical, which is available to the Programme Manager, delivery team and Project Leaders, and prior to generating proposals Project Leaders will carry out a search for information which might be applicable, a list of which will be supplied with the proposal. Regular literature searches will be conducted to maintain awareness of advances in relevant fields.

Management of the Creation of Knowledge.
Capability Group Leaders in the Consortium have a defined role in identifying and capturing knowledge within their groups as well as for identifying pan-Consortium trends. Knowledge experts in the Consortium support this process. The Programme Manager will play an active part in guiding research directions by maintaining an overview of work in a wide range of areas, and will be supported by Information Resource Experts who will identify trends and developments.
