Preferred Bidder - The January 17, 2007 announcement

In January, the Secretary of State for Defence announced that the Metrix consortium had been selected as preferred bidder for a new Defence Technical Academy which will be located at St Athan.

The overall investment is considered to be greater than that for the London Olympics, and it is crucial that such a commitment can create a stimulus for both local and regional regeneration within Wales.

The development will be complementary to the Welsh Assembly Government's aspirations to create an Aerospace Centre of Excellence at St Athan.

The construction programme is an estimated £1bn and will create 1500 jobs.
