UK Armed Forces Nutrition Advisory Service (AFNAS) |

This Service was launched with the UK Defence Food Services Integrated Project Team (DFS IPT), UK Ministry of Defence, in January 2006, and provides expert advice and information on diet, nutrition, and military feeding.
It is available only to UK Armed Forces personnel and civil servants via nutritionline@feedingtheforces.co.uk.

Who can use the Service? AFNAS is provided free of charge to all UK Armed Forces personnel and civil servants. Any individual may use the Service, including new recruits to the Armed Forces, catering staff, and medical personnel.
Any other queries should be submitted directly to QCDN. |

How do I use the Service? The Service is provided by email. To submit a question, click on the link below, and follow the simple instructions. You will be asked for the following information:
- Name and rank
- Service / Staff Number
- Unit / Location
- Your Question
A member of the AFNAS team will respond to your email as soon as possible. Note that the email address is external to government networks, so you should ensure that local Unit instructions for sending external emails are followed.
All correspondence, and any personal information provided, will be treated in the strictest confidence, in accordance with the Data Protection Act. No individual will be identifiable by anyone other than the dietetic team leading the Service, and no personal information will be accessible to MOD personnel. Questions relating to medical matters may be referred to the Surgeon General's Department (MOD), but the individual enquirer will not be identified. |

What sort of things can I ask about?
The sort of things you might want to ask about include:
- Defence Nutrition, such as:
Training or operating in the heat, cold, or at altitude
Using operational ration packs
In-barrack feeding
Operational group feeding
Fresh food supplements
Military sports events and expeditions
- General nutrition:
What should I eat to stay healthy?
What is the best way to cut down on the amount of fat in my diet?
What are good and bad fats?
How much salt should I have?
What should I eat for breakfast?
- Diet:
I'm a vegetarian, what should I eat to make sure I stay healthy?
I'm pregnant, what foods should I eat, and what should I avoid?
- Performance / Sports Nutrition:
What should I eat to improve my training and help me to recover more quickly?
How many calories do I need?
Do food supplements work? Are there side effects?
- Hydration:
What should I drink, how much, and when?
- Losing / gaining weight, dieting, fad diets
- Cooking methods
- Food allergies and intolerances

You should be aware that although this service is free to the enquirer, DFS IPT is charged a nominal fee. It is therefore requested that you save time by providing as much detail as possible in your submission (for example, the type and amount of training you are doing, the exact nature of the event you are about to undertake, or the conditions you will be operating in).
Use of the service is monitored and anyone found abusing the facility may be reported. |
