Following 18 months of successful delivery of an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) service to the Dutch Army in Afghanistan, QinetiQ were contracted to enable the Polish forces to deliver their own UAS capability in theatre.
Work for the Polish army started out as a fully managed service with the aim of transitioning to a Polish led operation. Operating from Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in theatre QinetiQ gave front line training to teams of Polish Army personnel in the maintenance and operation of the unmanned aerial vehicles.
QinetiQ were therefore recently very pleased to have received two accolades from the Polish Chief of Staff for this work, commending QinetiQ for the “priceless advice” and thanking the Team for our professionalism and dedication in delivering the joint operation.
Earlier, during 2009 & 2010, our team of experts had been operating an Unmanned Air System (UAS) as a turnkey managed service solution in Tarin Kowt in the Uruzgan province of central Afghanistan for the Royal Netherlands Army.
The QinetiQ team provided the Dutch commanders with data by providing all the manpower necessary to operate and maintain Aerostar UAVs which are used to deliver the reconnaissance, persistent surveillance and intelligence gathering required.
The operations significantly contributed to the operation and safety of the Dutch and other NATO forces in the region. In addition to actively supporting front line troops, QinetiQ’s solution also saved the armed forces both the time and cost of training troops to operate equipment and technology which will evolve (they simply task the sortie and receive back, in a timely way, the intelligence material they need to meet their operational requirements).
Dr Chris Hobbs of QinetiQ’s UAS Managed Services said
“Providing a 24/7 service, often flying up to 10 hours per day and working in challenging and dusty temperatures typically ranging from minus 15°C to plus 40°C tests the effectiveness of both the QinetiQ team and the platform and the control systems – we have more than been up to the challenge and we are very proud to have our contribution acknowledged by the Polish military through these two accolades.”
