QinetiQ has been working with the MOD and local planners over the past two years to replace the current 50 year old building with a design which will meet the future needs of the range in the most cost-effective manner. The new building will centralise the command and control functions, including air traffic control and meteorological office of the range, and include additional office accommodation, all of which will be built to the highest standards of energy efficiency.
Planning permission was granted last year and work has recently started with an expected completion date in Spring 2015. The existing buildings are expected to be decommissioned and demolished once the new building is in service.
Rik Sellwood, QinetiQ Site Manager at MOD Aberporth, said; “This investment announcement is a significant milestone in the 75 year history of the range, enabling it to continue to provide high-quality services tailored to modern Defence demands. The investment is a commitment to the area for the foreseeable future and will allow the site to go from strength to strength. We are constantly striving to be good neighbours and ensure that we work closely with the local community for everyone’s benefit.”
Steve Attrill of the MOD Trials, Evaluation Services and Targets (TEST) Project Team said; “For three quarters of a century the MOD Aberporth Range has provided a vital test and evaluation, and training capability for the Armed Forces and our investment in the new building will help sustain this into the future”.
