13 Teams From Maritime Industry Compete At Ocean Basin In Haslar
29th November 2013: QinetiQ’s Ocean Basin facility at Haslar hosted the 2013 Industry Powerboat Challenge this month. In its third year, the event, organised and hosted by QinetiQ, brings together teams from across the UK maritime industry to race radio-controlled model powerboats designed and made by team members.
The 2013 Industry Powerboat Challenge saw thirteen teams take part including four from BAE Systems, two from BMT, the MOD’s DE&S Submarine Platform Group, GE Energy Management, Babcock International, Steller Systems, the Naval Design Partnering Team and two from QinetiQ. Competitors ranged from apprentices and graduates to managing directors, and saw them travelling from as far as Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cumbria to take part.
After the teams had raced each other twice in a series of heats, the “A” final of the highest scoring teams was close-run between QinetiQ, Steller Systems and BMT, BAE Systems Maritime Services (Isle of Wight), with QinetiQ winning the final race and BMT in second. The event was brought to a close with prize-giving awarded by QinetiQ’s Managing Director for Maritime, Sarah Kenny. She said at the event;
“We were thrilled to hold the 3rd Industry Powerboat Challenge at Haslar and welcome our friends and colleagues from across industry. The event provides the opportunity for us to get together in an informal setting and, as always, the competition was keenly fought and great fun. We were very proud that QinetiQ had the winning boat against some very strong competition from other companies.”
