Lightweight Space Telescopes

The QinetiQ Space Telescope Baffle can be used to prevent stray light from the Earth’s reflection from entering the optical system during in orbit observation:

Efficient rejection of stray light
Thermally isolating iso-static mountings
The high stiffness, high thermoeleastic stability and low mass (only 22 kg for 0.8 x 1.7m)

At the upper end of the Baffle, a single shot deployable cover can be accommodated to protect the satellite’s sensitive optics against contamination during the on-ground activities, and against direct sunlight during in-orbit commissioning.

The QinetiQ Space Telescope Baffle, together with the protection cover and its deployment mechanism, obtained its flight heritage on the French COROT mission.
