QinetiQ’s DSALT virtual training programme scoops IET Innovation Award
DSALT, which QinetiQ delivers to the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), provides virtual pre-deployment training to the British Armed Forces. It enables troops and aircrew to train alongside international partners in sophisticated simulated environments in real time. Speaking in 2014, Russ Cole, Flight Simulation and Synthetic Trainers Team Leader at MOD's Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), described DSALT as: "a vital, life-saving capability, essential to effective mission preparation."
Tom Sawyer, Business Director for Training at QinetiQ, said: "From its inception in 2008, DSALT has exploited technology developed for industries such as the gaming market, to provide mission critical, winning capability. This type of innovation is at heart of everything we do at QinetiQ and we are extremely proud to be recognised for this prestigious award.
"DSALT is a model of collaboration, with QinetiQ working alongside consortium partners Boeing and Plexys, and industry colleagues Inzpire, to provide an exceptional service to the RAF and British Army."
Upon presenting the award, the IET Award judging panel said: "The winning entry demonstrates a highly innovative use of multiple commercial off-the-shelf technologies in gaming, virtualisation, distributed computing and simulation; and has demonstrated proven benefits for its intended use."
QinetiQ's Global Navigation Satellite System receiver was also recognised in the Navigation and Surveillance Communications category, having been shortlisted and receiving a certificate of merit.
