Boeing and QinetiQ Sign Extension to Wind Tunnel Contract

09 Dec 2013

Monday 9th December 2013: Boeing has signed a five-year contract extension with QinetiQ to use its unique, five-metre pressurised wind tunnel for testing and development of the low speed aerodynamics performance of its current and future aircraft. The contract will provide Boeing with access to the wind tunnel as it looks to develop new programmes.

"The partnership between Boeing and QinetiQ in wind tunnel testing has been a fruitful one, contributing in recent years to the development of aircraft such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX," said Sir Roger Bone, President of Boeing in the UK. "We are pleased to be extending this partnership with QinetiQ and look forward to five more years of successful collaboration."

Gaz Borland, QinetiQ Managing Director for Air said, “QinetiQ has a dedicated team that has over twenty years’ experience testing for Boeing, and we are delighted that they have decided to continue to utilise the wind tunnel facility as an integral part of the critical design path of its aircraft. As one of only three large, low-speed, pressurised wind tunnels in the world, and the only one in the UK, the wind tunnel is a significant British asset and one that is very important to the development of the UK aerospace industry.”

Over the past ten years, QinetiQ wind tunnel based in Farnborough, Hampshire has been used by Boeing to help design high lift systems for improved take-off and landing performance for numerous programmes including the 787 family, 777 family, the 747-8 and the 737 MAX.

The 5 metre wind tunnel has a simulation capability that is unique in the UK. Its large size makes accurate modelling of details possible and, with pressurisation, allows Boeing to simulate the aerodynamic performance much closer to full scale than would be achievable in a similar-sized unpressurised wind tunnel. The facility provides high quality data that is of great value to the aerospace industry.
