13 Sep 2010
QinetiQ announces the appointment of a new Health, Safety and Environment Director, Stephen Evans-Howe. Stephen, aged 36, joins the business from VT Group. This appointment is announced following the Group’s commitment back in April 2010 to create the new safety role following the recommendations of Sir Robert Nelson’s independent review of the findings of the Haddon-Cave Report into the loss of Nimrod XV230. Stephen will be responsible for establishing a revised safety framework within which QinetiQ will report whilst leading and developing a fresh approach to health and safety as the company moves into a new phase of its development.

Stephen brings both operational and HS&E experience to the role having worked in the defence, civil engineering, aerospace and government support services fields. Most recently he was interim HS&E director for VT Group, prior to its acquisition by Babcock and between 2008 and 2010 Head of HSE and Risk at VT Group. With over five years’ experience at Merlin Entertainments Group, the theme park and attractions business, including hands on operational experience, Stephen has extensive experience of embedding a cohesive and strong safety culture into organisations ensuring that first class strategy, systems, procedures and culture undergo continuous improvement. He also has experience from Honeywell and Trant Engineering. Stephen will report directly to QinetiQ Chief Executive, Leo Quinn.

Commenting on the appointment Leo Quinn said: “I am delighted to announce Stephen’s appointment. On the back of recommendations of Sir Robert Nelson’s report and given the new phase of QinetiQ’s development that is underway, we wanted to further develop our approach to continuous improvement in the field of health, safety and environment – key considerations given the important markets in which we operate. Stephen will work with the Board, the executive team and the business to ensure that QinetiQ maintains its reputation for excellence in this field. He will be responsible for embedding a cohesive and strong safety culture across every part of our UK business ensuring that QinetiQ delivers on its duty of care to all stakeholders including customers and employees.”
