MOD Boscombe Down is owned by the MOD and operated by QinetiQ under a Long-Term Partnering Agreement and delivers essential test, evaluation and training support services for our Armed Forces.

QinetiQ operates a fleet of civil registered and regulated aircraft from Boscombe Down and the bulk of our work is in support of ETPS, training the next generation of military and civilian Flight Test professionals, which is an essential defence activity. Our course is fully approved and regulated by both the UK Civil Aviation Authority and the European Aviation Safety Agency.

QinetiQ’s aircraft operations with our own aircraft fleet are performed solely under civil regulations and do not fall under the jurisdiction of the MOD.

QinetiQ works closely with all local authorities in the area as well as other public agencies and regional emergency services. The Fire Safety team, for example, delivers emergency planning exercises, community fire safety events and training programmes for National Grid firefighters and the Wiltshire Air Ambulance as well as providing additional support for the local fire service during serious incidents unconnected to the airfield. QinetiQ helicopters, aircrew and research engineers also visit local schools and colleges to help enthuse the next generation of scientists and engineers about prospective careers in aviation or the military.

QinetiQ acknowledges that flight operations from any airfield can sometimes be a nuisance. However, the company makes very effort to minimise any inconvenience or disruption to members of the public and local communities arising from operational activities at MOD Boscombe Down. All test pilot training, for example, makes full use of advanced flight simulators, and all in-flight training is undertaken at high altitude with routes constantly alternated across the Test Pilot School’s designated flying area in south west England.

By the very nature of the work undertaken at MOD Boscombe Down, many aircraft operations are undertaken at short notice and, without routine scheduling of flights, it is not possible to provide the public with reliable advance notification of individual events/movements. However, as a matter of courtesy, the company will always aim to provide the local community with prior notice of any activity that may lead to a significant increase in air traffic or result in potential noise disturbance in any particular area.
