National Cadets Week: Supporting Cadets, Strengthening Communities

As National Cadets Week highlights the impact of cadet forces across the UK, it is an opportunity to recognise the extraordinary contribution they make to young people, local communities and the wider defence community.

The cadet movement is incredibly diverse, spanning Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, RAF Air Cadets and Combined Cadet Forces in schools. Together, they provide thousands of young people with opportunities to learn new skills, build friendships, take on challenges and contribute positively to their communities.

At a time when many young people face increasing social and economic pressures, cadet organisations offer a valuable sense of purpose, belonging and personal development. They help participants develop skills that are highly valued throughout life, from teamwork and communication to leadership and self-discipline, while also strengthening connections between communities and the armed forces.

Support from employers and communities is so important, by encouraging volunteering and recognising the value that Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) bring, organisations can play a vital role in sustaining and expanding cadet opportunities.

Last year, QinetiQ supported Army Cadet 1st Battalion The Highlanders in northern Scotland when funding challenges threatened annual camp and training opportunities for cadets from remote communities. By making accommodation available on Benbecula, we helped ensure those young people could access valuable training, development and life-changing experiences.

The impact of that support was recognised by Brigadier Gary McDade, Army Cadets' national lead:

"I'm really grateful for QinetiQ's support to Army Cadets in enabling our cadets from the Highlands, and elsewhere, to train at their site at Benbecula. As Gold members of the Armed Forces Employer Recognition Scheme, this commitment to developing the next generation makes such a difference and is hugely appreciated by cadets and adult volunteers alike."

National Cadets Week is a chance to thank those volunteers, celebrate the achievements of cadets and raise awareness of the opportunities available. If you have ever considered volunteering, even a few hours a week can make a meaningful difference. Supporting cadets is an investment in young people, their futures and the communities they help strengthen.
