Late working: Friday 10 & 24 October 2025
On the above dates, the Range will continue to operate into the afternoon. This means that the red flags will remain hoisted later than usual, and that access to the Outer Sea Area and Havengore Bridge will be delayed on the afternoon tide. There will also be a delay to allowing access to Public Right of Way routes which will remain closed until the red flags have been lowered.
Exceptional Range Activity: October 2025
During the period specified below, there will be 2 days on which noise generated by an activity at the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Test and Evaluation Range at Shoeburyness may exceed the usual self-imposed limit of 125 decibels (dB):
- 10 to 24 October 2025
QinetiQ operates the facility on behalf of the MOD and as part of our daily process to manage explosive activity we conduct acoustic forecasting, modelling, test shots and monitoring. In normal circumstances, if it’s predicted that the upper self-imposed limit of 125dB might be exceeded, work is postponed until more favourable conditions prevail. However, it’s not always possible to delay some work and these particular activities will proceed as long as predictions do not indicate that a maximum noise limit of 135dB will be exceeded.
We are not yet able to confirm on which 2 days the activity will be conducted, but daily updates to this information will be posted on our website and our X feed (@SHB_Alerts).
This exception to the application of the usual upper limit (125dB) will only apply to a single event, on each of the 2 days that the activity takes place. All other work conducted on these days and throughout the period stated will be subject to the usual upper limit. The activity is subject to changes in the Range schedule.
Anyone with concerns about Range activity can contact the Careline team on qqshbenquiries@qinetiq.com or 0800 0560108.
Potton Bridge - Operational
Potton Bridge is operational and open to marine traffic on all high tides.
Old Ranges Patrols
Public use of the MOD foreshore between Shoebury Common and East Beach is prohibited. This means that no access is permitted for any purpose or reason, at any time. This is due to the historic use of the area involving explosive ordnance and the inherent risk of unexploded objects. The foreshore is also regulated by the MOD byelaws in order to preserve public safety. Fines and other penalties are applicable for acts in contravention of the byelaws, including trespass on these prohibited areas.
QinetiQ conducts foreshore patrols using its amphibious vehicles during the peak summer months when there is an increase in the volume of trespass. Anyone encountered by our patrols will be asked to leave the area. Please co-operate for your safety and for that of your family. More information about MOD prohibited beaches can be found here.
Havengore Bridge - Operational
Havengore Bridge is operational and open to marine traffic in accordance with MOD byelaws. More information.
Range Sea Danger Area
Inner Sea Area - closed to all marine traffic, personal watercraft and pedestrians at all times.
Outer Sea Area - open to marine traffic and personal watercraft when the Range is not active.
Yellow Diamond Signal: Rampart Street, Shoeburyness East Beach
The yellow diamond located at Rampart Street that indicates the 'open to the public' status of Shoeburyness East Beach is currently non-operational. The beach and foreshore remain open to the public as far as the yellow buoy line which demarcates the boundary of the area licensed for public use.
Personal Water Craft: Public Spaces Protection Order (PWC PSPO)
In addition to the restrictions and prohibitions imposed by the MOD byelaws, the MOD foreshore is included in the new 'Restricted Area' of a PSPO introduced by Southend City Council in November 2022. Fixed penalties will be issued to anyone found to be in breach of the Order. Full information can be found here.
Foulness Heritage Centre Open Day: Closed until April 2026
Visits must be booked in advance on the Heritage Centre website. Further information can be found here. Please note, QinetiQ does not manage the Heritage Centre and all enquiries should be directed to the Trustees of the centre via the website.
