Public Right of Way closures: April 2024 onwards

Please be advised the that following Public Right of Way routes on MOD Shoeburyness will remain closed from April 2024 for up to 6 months. This is to preserve public safety during major construction works to improve sea flood defences and is by Order of Essex Highways:

  • Footpath 26: Cupid's Chase to Morrin's Point
  • Footpath 28: Morrin's Point to Wakering Stairs
  • Pedestrian Gate 9 (Cupid's Chase)

The stretch of Footpath 28 from Morrin’s Point to Havengore Bridge will not be affected and Pedestrian Gate 19 (Havengore Bridge) will be open in accordance with MOD byelaws.


Havengore Bridge - Operational

Havengore Bridge is operational and open to marine traffic in accordance with MOD byelaws. More information.


Yellow Diamond Signals: Shoeburyness East Beach
The yellow diamonds that indicate the 'open to the public' status of Shoeburyness East Beach, and are located at either end of the beach are currently non-operational. The beach and foreshore remain open to the public as far as the yellow buoy line which demarcates the boundary of the area licensed for public use. 

Personal Water Craft: Public Spaces Protection Order (PWC PSPO)

In addition to the restrictions and prohibitions imposed by the MOD byelaws, the MOD foreshore is included in the new 'Restricted Area' of a PSPO introduced by Southend City Council in November 2022. Fixed penalties will be issued to anyone found to be in breach of the Order. Full information can be found here.   


Foulness Heritage Centre: Next open Sunday 7 April 2024 

Visits must be booked in advance. There will be no admission for those who have not booked. Further information can be found here


Potton Bridge - Operational
Potton Bridge is operational and open to marine traffic on all high tides.
