How can coding help an astronaut get through an airlock as quickly as possible? How can teamwork and encryption techniques help save the world?
These were just some of the challenges tackled by 12 and 13 year old students from schools across Worcestershire when we welcomed them to our Malvern site, for our biannual Hands on Science Day.
The event brought together over 70 students from five local schools for a day of hands on STEM activities and inspiring talks, designed to spark curiosity and showcase the real world impact of science and technology.
A day of discovery and problem solving
Throughout the day, students took part in a wide range of interactive challenges, exploring everything from the physics behind security bollards to cryptography, giving students a practical insight into how engineering and science are applied to solve complex problems.
Working with representatives from the UK’s intelligence, security and cyber agency GCHQ and our volunteers, the students collaborated in teams and competed to win the coveted QinetiQ Rubik’s Cube, all while gaining exposure to the variety of careers that exist within the science and technology sector.
“It was great to see the students taking an interest and working hard as a team to solve the decryption challenges. Seeing them succeed and enjoy their time felt incredibly rewarding” - Jensen, Cyber Apprentice at QinetiQ and event volunteer.
Student feedback highlighted just how important it is for young people to meet and talk to professionals working in STEM roles: “I had a fantastic day. It was great to meet so many people and have a go at different things. Talking to people who actually work here made me think I might want to do something like this in the future.”
Events like QinetiQ’s Hands on Science Day play a vital role in de-mystifying science and technology careers, building confidence and encouraging young people to see themselves as the scientists and engineers of the future.
We’re proud to support local schools and look forward to welcoming the next group of curious minds to Malvern soon.
