The Weapons Sector Research Framework (WSRF) Early Careers Challenge 2026 unites next generation of weapons sector experts

As the UK continues to respond to an increasingly complex and rapidly evolving threat environment, we recently hosted the fourth annual Weapons Sector Research Framework (WSRF) Early Careers Challenge at our Farnborough headquarters, in partnership with Dstl.

The challenge is an important moment in the WSRF calendar, giving those at the beginning of their weapons research careers the opportunity to work collaboratively with peers from the framework’s partner base. Bringing together subject matter experts from across industry allows participants to establish lasting professional relationships within the weapons sector community, as well as being able to share different perspectives and insights throughout the programme.

Over four months, eight teams applied their mix of technical, business and project delivery skills to their chosen technical challenge, set by Dstl. Supported by a dedicated mentor, each team engaged in rapid research and development to define and refine a concept that addressed their selected challenge.

The day brought together weeks of problem-solving and preparation, providing teams with the opportunity to showcase their suggested solution to a panel of industry representatives from across the framework. Alongside the presentations, participants took part in collaborative activities such as wargaming exercises where teams responded to simulated scenarios by making strategic decisions based on the evolving conditions. The activity encouraged participants to debate different approaches and consider the wider factors that can influence defence decision-making.

The three highest-scoring teams from the panel later progressed to a final round, where they presented their concepts to senior WSRF stakeholders and answered further questions regarding their approach.

Reflecting on the importance of the challenge, Charlie Clark, Dstl’s Technical Lead for WSRF, said:

“The challenge is a wonderful opportunity for the early careers to establish long-term relationships between the partner base of WSRF and also to engage in their own research and development of concepts within the Dstl-set technical challenges related to real-world defensive needs.

QinetiQ WSRF are to be congratulated for organising such a hugely successful event.”

Programmes such as this also demonstrate the important role those at the start of their careers play in bringing innovative thinking to an evolving defence landscape, helping to develop the skills and expertise needed to support future UK defence and security capabilities.

Congratulations to the winning team on their success and to all the teams that contributed throughout the challenge.
