Soldier Systems

The protection of individual or groups of soldiers is made challenging by the physical constraints of load carriage, endurance and information management, the hugely diverse tasks they undertake and the range of scenarios in which they operate. However, soldiers remain the most flexible asset on the battlefield.

Integrated Warrior System

The protection of individual or groups of soldiers is made challenging by the physical constraints of load carriage, endurance and information management, the hugely diverse tasks they undertake and the range of scenarios in which they operate. However, soldiers remain the most flexible asset on the battlefield.

QinetiQ’s Integrated Warrior System (IWS) is a power and data management system that integrates seamlessly with the user’s body armour or vest to:

  • enhance situational awareness
  • maintain connectivity with adjacent and higher level units, and
  • reduce the operator’s and supporting unit’s logistical burden, ultimately lightening the combat load

Built on a flexible and scalable architecture, IWS draws power from a central battery, distributes it to multiple tactical devices or peripherals and provides an interface for data sharing and management.

The system supports command and control (C2) – allowing commanders to immediately send fragmentary orders and mission-specific information to leaders on the ground, improving their decision-making efficiency. Its combat data management functionality supports mission planning and after-action reporting.

 

Shoulder Wearable Acoustic Targeting System

Ground forces operating in urban and rural combat environments are faced with the continual risk of random attack by snipers and other gunfire threats.

QinetiQ’s SWATS™ (Shoulder Wearable Acoustic Targeting System) – part of our EARS family of gunshot localisation systems – reduces casualties by giving users the immediate situational awareness capabilities they need to respond instantly and accurately to hostile attacks.

Compact and lightweight, SWATS is mounted on the user’s non-firing shoulder. The system enables soldiers in difficult acoustic environments to go immediately from a defensive to an offensive posture, accurately detecting and locating the origin of incoming gunfire in a fraction of a second. SWATS alerts the soldier with an audible voice announcement on the range, bearing and grid position of the threat.

 

Soldier Combat Identification

QinetiQ helps customers choose and deliver effective, value-for-money Combat ID capability that enables the rapid and accurate positive identification of troops in complex operational environments.

We provide independent advice on selecting, procuring, applying and integrating the right technologies and equipment into the Combat ID solution, and ensuring a coherent and timely introduction of the capability into service.

Our Combat ID solution for the individual dismounted soldier includes:

  • a personal beacon kit
  • a thermal beacon that can be identified by all NATO thermal sensors at beyond weapons engagement range, in a unit weighing less than 330g.

The personal beacon kit consists of an active NIR component that reduces close-range dazzle by spreading the emission over a wider area, and an integrated pair of passive Mirage® cold-sky reflector halos mounted onto the soldier’s helmet.

Designed to achieve the optimum balance between endurance, weight and operating range, the system requires only two AA batteries per 15 hours of use, and is fully operational in less than 60 seconds. It is modular and flexible to allow the soldier or commander to manage its performance based on local intelligence and mission objectives.

Effective Combat ID reduces ‘friendly fire’ or fratricide incidents in operations by enabling military personnel to distinguish between friend and foe in combat – improving situational understanding and firing efficiency. To enhance identification and interoperability across coalition and allied forces, QinetiQ’s solutions are compliant with NATO standard STANAG 2129.
